Cracks in walls are a frustrating but inevitable part of a homeowner’s life and though they may look ominous, they can be made to look as good as new with the assistance of a professional plasterer.
Don’t risk it by attempting to fix the cracks by yourself. Instead, allow a professional to take care of the job for you. This blog will explain the steps involved with fixing cracks in your walls.
What causes cracks in walls?
Cracks in walls can occur for a number of reasons. A newly built house may develop cracks as a result of settling, while older builds can develop cracks due to the building materials shrinking over time. All homes are also susceptible to earthquakes, which can cause cracks to appear!
Cracks can also develop due to natural circumstances, such as exposure to heat, water or ice, or from moisture. While cracks can be unsightly, smaller ones can often easily be fixed.
What process will your plasterer follow?
- To protect your furniture and furnishings, we will take care to move or cover them with a polythene and/or drop sheets.
- We will remove any loose plaster using the corner of a filling knife. Then, we will use a vacuum to get rid of any leftover dust.
- Once the crack has been scored out, we will apply tape, secured by a bedding coat of plaster.
- We will then apply plaster using a trowel, working the blade along the length of the crack.
- Once the plaster has dried, we will apply a second coat, followed by a third top coat.
- We will then sand the plaster to a paint-ready finish.
- Finally, we will use the vacuum to get rid of any dust.
By following these steps, we will repair the small cracks that appear in your wall, keeping it strong and sturdy for the future.
